Visit to FAO Rome office March 14th 2002 Emily Black On March 14th Franco Molteni and I visited the FAO Rome office to make a presentation about the PROMISE research and the planned 2003 international conference. The presentation was made to the interdepartmental committee for climate change. It was attended by FAO specialists in agriculture, hydrology, forestry and economic analysis. The main presentation consisted of an introduction to the structure of PROMISE research, three examples of PROMISE projects (development of a large scale hydrological model of Africa, seasonal forecasting of Sorghun yields in Senegal and the HAPPY groundnut model) and finally a summary of our plans for an interational conference. Franco Molteni briefly spoke about the role of ICTP in PROMISE and ICTP's work in supporting scientists from developing countries. The discussion was wide-ranging and included issues such as down-scaling, the reliability of future climate scenarios, the PROMISE data archive and the relevance of PROMISE to user communities. It is hoped that the meeting will lead to the FAO participating in PROMISE. Additionally there was considerable interest in long-term collaboration between the FAO climate change group and the climate physics group at ICTP.
