Monsoon environments: Agricultural and hydrological impacts of seasonal variability and climate change

sponsored by EU PROMISE, ICTP, WRCP and START/CLIMAG

24th-28th March 2003 at ICTP

PROMISE came to an end in March 2003. An international conference is planned to disseminate the results of the project. PROMISE research is inter-disciplinary and applicable to end-users and policy-makers. We aimed to reflect this by including presentations from development agency representatives and end-users as well as from leading resesarchers in meteorology, hydrology and agriculture from Europe, America and monsoon-affected countries. The following sessions were held:

1. Introductory Session

2. Monsoon processes

3. Sensitivity of monsoon variability to land surface processes

4. The impacts of climate variability and change

5. Interaction with end-users of monsoon research

6. Poster session (covering all conference topics)

The sessions will consist of key-note talks by invited speakers, oral presentations and poster presentations.

The meeting will be held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, which also hosted the highly successful 2001 PROMISE-sponsored workshop on land surface processes. We anticipate being able to provide approximately 50 scholarships for participants from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to attend the meeting.
