The group's work has three main foci, which aim to improve our ability to predict on seasonal to interannual timescales:

  • to develop our understanding of tropical variability in the coupled atmosphere-ocean system, particularly on intraseasonal timescales.

  • to investigate the response of the global circulation to tropical heating anomalies, including how the remote ocean response may affect the teleconnections, and how these teleconnections depend on the basic state.

  • to investigate the variability and predictability of the Asian Summer Monsoon on intraseasonal to interannual timescales, and to identify those factors that influence that predictability.

Recently, the initiation of links with the users of seasonal forecasts (e.g. agriculture, water resources) has provided a new research dimension to the group's work which we plan to develop further.
